In this clip, Engel answers how it felt to face imminent death upon his kidnapping in Syria.

I was annoyed that these people were going to end my life…I wasn’t so much afraid of the pain and the death and all of this. I was mostly annoyed like ‘this is how it’s going to end? I’m not going to get another shot because these guys are going to kill me for no particular reason.’

Amazingly, even after his ordeal, Engel told the audience he and his crew are on their way back to Syria:

“I’m going to be traveling with one of them back along the Syrian border in a few days.”

If you’re not offering anything to a 24-year-old mom making $25,000 dollars a year as a waitress…you’re not solving the essential problem of the country. And the Republican Party really isn’t offering much of that.

If you mention the name Ted Cruz to other senators, you just get titanic oceans of eye rolling.

The New York Times columnist David Brooks sat down with PBS’s Jeff Greenfield on April 21, 2013 at 92nd Street Y. In this clip, Brooks discusses some of the more controversial new Republican lawmakers, including Texas Senator Ted Cruz:

“You’re a freshman, you don’t go in and take over hearings, you like hang around and learn how it’s done.”

Brooks went further on Cruz’s behavior:

“It’s like the most un-conservative act to come in two weeks into the job and decide the Senate exists for you to take it over.”

Brooks concluded with a comment on the links being made between Cruz and former Senator Joe McCarthy:

“It doesn’t help that he has a face that looks a little like Joe McCarthy.”

Do you agree that new lawmakers should learn the ropes rather than making political waves right away? Leave a comment!

Carmon was unwavering in her support for gaffe coverage.

I’m pro-gaffe. A gaffe is important when it tells us something really fundamental about what the person thinks.

Carmon used examples like controversial former Congressman Todd Akin, who infamously made comments about “legitimate rape” during the 2012 senate race. She also touched on former presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

As part of our new partnership with Salon.com, we conducted our first interview with staff writer Irin Carmon on the lessons learned from the controversy over President Obama complimenting California Attorney General Kamila Harris’s looks. Carmon wrote a piece about this for Salon, and told us the President should have known better:

The moment that you bring looks into it, you’re bringing something that women constantly have as this double edge sword, a catch 22, so I think the President should know better.

Carmon also stressed the double standard in place for male vs. female emotion, using crying as an example.

“When it comes down to things like crying…women when they engage in that kind of emotion, people have this kind of ‘can she do this question?’ but where as when a man tears up they think ‘oh what a softy.’”

And on whether a potential President Hillary Clinton will change the lives of women?

“It will mean a lot in terms of symbolic representation, but it won’t mean that every single struggle is over.”

Do you think President Obama was wrong to compliment a female public figures looks? Leave a comment!
